How the Latin Grammy Best New Artist Field Gets Built and Where a First Album Enters

The Latin Recording Academy announced its 2026 nominations on September 16, and the Best New Artist field has 11 names: Delilah, FABIAN, Loulu Gilberto, Arath Herce, Macario Martínez, maye, Sofia Monroy, Kendall Peña, Dora Sanches, ARIA VEGA and Zeca Veloso. The full list across categories is in Infobae's nominations roundup. The ceremony is November 12 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, with 60 categories. Édgar Barrera leads with 10 nominations.

For a first-album act, the useful lesson is timing. The people on that list were entered months before anyone saw a ballot.

Who can enter an album

Artists do not enter themselves by filling out a form on the day they feel ready. Per the Academy's rules at latingrammy.com, recordings are submitted by voting members and by registered record companies. That is the gate.

A label with a registered account can enter its roster. A self-released artist needs another route: a voting member who believes in the project and submits it, or a partnership with a label or distributor that handles submissions. Both take relationships, and relationships take months.

Check the Academy's current rulebook for exact dates before you plan anything. The eligibility window covers releases within a set stretch of the year, and the submission period closes well before the nominations are announced. A record that comes out a few weeks after the cutoff waits a full cycle.

From submission to the first-round ballot

Once recordings are submitted and cleared for eligibility, voting members see them in the first round, where they vote in the categories they know. Those votes produce the nominees. Best New Artist is among the general categories, so the field reflects which new names members actually heard and remembered.

That is the failure mode for newcomers. A strong album that nobody on the voting side has heard can be fully eligible and still go nowhere. Submission gets the record in the room. It does not make anyone listen.

What helps is a clean package in front of members and label contacts early: a short bio, the release story, press clips, a streaming link that works, and a booking and management contact. A press kit that opens from one link is easier to forward than an attachment. BCKSTG Pro includes a shareable press kit link for this reason, but any kit works as long as someone can read it in two minutes.

Where the Puerto Rican acts landed

Puerto Rico's presence this year sits in the urban categories, not in Best New Artist. Rauw Alejandro, Omar Courtz, Young Miko, Ozuna, Wisin, Ñengo Flow and Chencho Corleone all appear in those fields, per the Infobae list.

For boricua newcomers, that is the real picture. The island's artists are being recognized for urbano work, but the new-artist slot went elsewhere. An act with a first album in reggaeton or trap latino is not competing only against its own scene. It is competing against pop, regional, Brazilian and singer-songwriter debuts for the same few spots.

Two practical moves follow. First, line up a sponsor or label submission as soon as the album date is fixed, not after release. Second, build the proof of momentum members will recognize: a Spotify for Artists profile with a real listener base, live dates, and press from outlets they read.

If the album lands after this cycle's cutoff, plan for the next one. The 2026 nominees show what the field looks like when the groundwork was done early.
